Alternative Site Testing (AST) means you can use parts of the body other than your fingertips to check your blood glucose levels. The system allows you to test from the palm, forearm, calf, or thigh, with equivalent results to fingertip testing. With the Microlife GlucoTeq blood glucose monitor system your fingertips feel less pain. At other body sites, nerve endings are not so numerous, and you will not feel as much pain as you will experience at the fingertip.
AC (Ante Cibum) and PC (Post Cibum) meal markers provide more details on the test results of your blood glucose before and after meals. Testing your blood glucose both before and after meals, allows you to see how that meal affects your blood glucose levels and helps you to understand which meals may be best for your blood glucose control. During the day, levels tend to be at their lowest just before meals. A normal blood sugar level is less than 100 mg/dL after not eating (fasting) for at least 8 hours. And less than 140 mg/dL 2 hours after eating. The most powerful influence on blood glucose levels comes from food. Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, the peak blood glucose levels are often likely to occur around two hours after a meal. The advantage of testing in so called "pairs" of before and after meals, is that you can see how much your sugar levels have gone up (or even down) between meals.
Hematocrit (HCT) is the Volume percentage of red blood cells in the blood, measured as part of a blood test. The measurement depends on the number and size of red blood cells. The hematocrit is slightly more accurate, as the packed cell volume (PCV) includes small amounts of blood plasma trapped between the red cells. HCT levels are estimated by measuring oxidation of mediator diffusion to the upper gold electrode during the first portion of the assay. The HCT-corrected glucose levels are determined by an on-meter algorithm. The technology used in the Microlife Gluco-A+ provides accurate blood glucose measurements that are insensitive to HCT levels across the range 20-60%.
